Making the Moments Matter: Episode 17

Welcome back to Episode 17!

Today we discussing how we are keeping The Fun in our Family and Making the Moments Matter.

“Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life” Charlotte M. Mason

On our last podcast we talked about some changes we made due to circumstances on busy work with no results and children dreading the next thing. Honestly if there is no joy or fun happening while learning, it’s not worth the effort we’re putting in. Our goal is creating a learning lifestyle where our children enjoy learning and being together doing life. Fostering and sparking a love for learning is key in educating our children. When the twinkle goes out we have lost them and we might as well send them on the Big Yellow.

“We all have need to be trained to see, and to have our eyes opened before we can take in the joy that is meant for us in this beautiful life.” Charlotte M. Mason

We certainly know everything we do is not going to be fun and full of joy BUT making mundane things a little more enchanted goes a long way. If there is something your children just can not enjoy, there is sure to be another way of doing it and probably more fun. Just changing how we phrase something changes how children view it. Calling laundry A Folding Party or declaring it Make Your Own Breakfast day. You can make it fun~ it just takes a little joy and effort on our part.

“To introduce children to literature is to instal them in a very rich and glorious kingdom, to bring a continual holiday to their doors, to lay before them a feast exquisitely served. But they must learn to know literature by being familiar with it from the very first. A child’s intercourse must always be with good books, the best that we can find.”

*Setting the feast and they will eat (bird story)

*Talk about the areas we have set up around the house to invite learning

“Look on education as something between the child’s soul and God. Modern Education tends to look on it as something between the child’s brain and the standardized test.”

*Show them beautiful art and listen to beautiful music

*Nature walks

“Never be within doors when you can rightly be without.”

*Picnics (Charlotte Mason quote about being outdoors)

*Learning out on a blanket

*Play outside every day

“Children should have the joy of living in far lands, in other persons, in other times – a delightful double existence; and this joy they will find, for the most part, in their story books. Their lessons, too, history and geography, should cultivate their conceptive powers. If the children do not live in the times of his history lesson, be not at home in the climate his geography book describes, why, these lessons will fail of their purpose.”

*Poetry Teatime

*Listening to audio books at meals or rest: meet on stairs and they tell me what they listened to and something about it. (Snack and story)

*Intentional Playtime: Games

*Movie morning

“Every day, every hour, the parents are either passively or actively forming those habits in their children upon which, more than upon anything else, future character and conduct depend…”
“The mother who takes pains to endow her children with good habits secures for herself smooth and easy days.”

*Folding Parties (Laundry)

*Friday Morning Cleaning Frenzy

Changing up our Homeschool Rhythm: Episode 16

Welcome back to Episode 16! Today we are going to discuss a mid year change up and what God is putting on our hearts about schooling our children.

Have you fallen into a rut with your homeschool? Are you just checking of your tasks and making sure they are done. Have you lost your Joy? The Bible tells us “A Joyful heart is good medicine, But a broken spirit dries up the bones” Proverbs 17:22 If you have lost your Joy and turned into a task master instead of imagination starter this episodes for you.

I have been pondering the wise words of an English Educator Charlotte Mason she says, The question is not how much does the youth know when he has finished his education but how much does he care and about how many orders of things does he care? In Fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set and therefore how full is the life that is set before him? These words have rang very true lately in both of our school days. We have been pondering these wise words and watching our children. Were we really creating an environment to thrive in?

Like Amber swings toward the CM method, I tend to swing toward the brave writer lifestyle. It too follows a CM flavor and Julie Bogart says CM has influenced her writing among other people~ “In their unique ways, they each talk about absorbing and noticing and copying the writing skills of masters.”

She goes on to say… “Writing is not filling up a page with words. It’s about helping your kids to create new hooks in their minds so that they can express themselves more and more powerfully over the course of their lifetimes… and can do it in written form.”

I began reading back through my copy of The Writer’s Jungle making notes on big sticky notes and implementing. One section at a time and we are finding more joy in our day.

You know what the beauty of these two thoughts of education? They are both right because it’s right for our own family and children. What works for my children is different for what works for Amber’s. While recognizing we are different in presentation, we are alike in our passion to live a life of learning in the most beautiful of ways!

We hope you enjoy our chat!

Our Super Husbands: Podcast Episode 7

… You husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together.
I Peter 3:7

If you think we do all this with our Super Woman cape on, you would be half right. Standing right beside us are our Super Husbands. I’m married to Scott and Amber is married to Joe. We couldn’t be more blessed to have husbands supporting all the crazy ideas we come up with.

Our husbands have our backs. They support our stay at home status, help with the chores, parent the children, say yes to adoption, step-in to help with the schooling, and cherish us just like Jesus. Marriage is hard work but we know it’s through our faith mixed with grace and mercy that spurs us to love each other well. If there is a disagreement, we talk it out. If there is a problem, we work it out. If there is a hard season, we pray it out. Never in our wildest dreams did we see ourselves delving into podcast world but these two men did and we want to introduce them to you!!!

When we recorded this episode, it was a little longer than the others so we divided it into two shows. The first episode features questions WE had for our husbands. The second will be questions we took from other adoptive friends on FB and IG. I believe what is shared may help other couples find their way to adoption and maybe homeschooling.

You can listen to this podcast here on the website or go to iTunes and listen. Either way please give us a review and know you are giving two southern podcast girls encouragement as we help you find Joy in family, adoption, and homeschooling. We give all the glory to Jesus. May He be glorified in everything we do!!!
